The Circle U Student Union (CUSU) has really kicked off. Fourteen student ambassadors from each of the seven universities meet regularly, and they recently signed the Terms of Reference.

Kickstarting mobility among students is an all-important goal for the Circle U. alliance. However, with more than 2,200 study programmes offered within the seven universities, many students would probably have a hard time finding exactly the right course for them.

On the 26th of April, experts on water from the seven universities of Circle U. come together for a scientific symposium.  This is a first event for our research communities to meet and an opportunity to address a central theme in Horizon Europe.

We are happy to announce that Circle U.‘s ERIA project (“Empowering Research and Innovation Actions”) on the research and innovation dimension of the alliance has just been selected by the European Commission. Circle U. ERIA will allow us to strengthen our Knowledge Hubs on Climate, Democracy and Global Health and empower our early-career researcher.

1 February, Svein Stølen was elected president of Circle U., and will steer the alliance through its initial development phase. In this interview Stølen, a Professor of Chemistry and Rector of the University of Oslo, shares his vision and motivation for Circle U, explains the potential it holds for students and staff, and reflects on his own experiences as an exchange student.

Circle U. was among the consortia selected for funding in the second ‘European Universities’ call for proposals. Webinars for rectors and students on 4 November mark the kick-off of the three year pilot project period.

Student representatives from the universities of the Circle U. European Alliance met for a 3 day intensive, collaborative seminar hosted by Université de Paris from March 5th to 8th 2020.

Over the last 18 months, the Circle U. partners have met every month to build trust and mutual understanding. Presidents, academic leaders, students and administrative staff have assembled across institutions to find new ideas, and to discuss and debate obstacles and solutions.

On 6 -7 June, Université de Paris hosted a first alliance seminar with an administrative focus. The overarching theme was to discuss what it will take to establish a European Inter-University Campus.

Coordination group members met with representatives from the student parliament

During the last coordination group meeting, the Alliance received valuable input from students. In the coming months the Alliance will use the input we receive from staff and students to construct innovative and sound work packages.

The coordination group had a productive meeting in Brussels on 28 June. The alliance is making progress towards a strong application to become a European University.
