Designed to showcase best examples of inter- and transdisciplinary research at Circle U. universities, the first edition of the ICUP went to:
Robert Arlinghaus, professor of integrative fisheries management at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, for the team project "Towards Sustainable Fisheries". Find out more about the project (youtube.com).
Dr. Manon Bajard, researcher in sedimentology, soil and paleoclimate at the University of Oslo, for the team project "VIKINGS: Volcanic Eruptions and Their Impacts on Climate, Environment, and Viking Society". Manon received the award together with her colleague Ingar M. Gundersen. Find out more about the project (youtube.com).
Dr. Barbara McGillivray, lecturer in digital humanities and cultural computation at King's College London, for the team project "The Language of mechanisation". Nilo Pedrazzini, a research assistant at the Alan Turing Institute, collected the award on her behalf. Find out more about the project (youtube.com).
The ceremony included a panel discussion with experts from within and outside the Circle U. alliance. "How can universities foster interdisciplinary research?" - This is the question we put to our panel that included:
- Mette Halskov Hansen, Vice-rector for Climate & the Environment and Cross-disciplinarity at the University of Oslo,
- Jean-Christophe Renauld Pro-Rector for Research at the University of Louvain,
- Samantha Aspinall Head of Interdisciplinary Resarch at the University of Leeds.
These were some of the key takeaways from the panel discussion:
- Universities should lead by example and put the spotlight on good practices;
- Ensure that appropriate funding is provided;
- Bring people from different disciplines together;
- Think top-down and bottom-up at the same time;
- Interdisciplinarity is not only important in research, but also in education.
The three laureates shared with the audience insights on how their work environment has been conducive to inter- and trans-disciplinary research.
Are you working on an inter- and trans-disciplinary project? If so, we'd love to hear from you and help you raise your project's visibility within our alliance. A new call is going to be launched in 2023. Stay tuned!
