Course description

"Governing Climate Risk: Research, Methods, and Action" is an intensive Circle U. doctoral summer school bringing together PhD researchers from across Europe to explore how climate risks are understood, assessed, researched, and acted upon in different disciplines and national contexts. The programme will be delivered in a blended format: five days of online sessions will be followed by a week on site in Berlin.

Grounded in the European Environment Agency's European Climate Risk Assessment – which identifies cascading risks across ecosystems, food, health, infrastructure and finance – the programme equips you with the analytical tools and pedagogical skills needed to communicate climate risk clearly and to support decision-making in complex settings. Through workshops and methods training, you will learn to work with diverse forms of climate data, examine governance challenges, advance your own research projects, while also translating technical thinking into accessible teaching for undergraduate learners.

This is your opportunity to work collaboratively across countries and disciplines, and develop shared responses to the cross-border risks highlighted in European climate assessments. By the end of the school, you will have strengthened your teaching practice, deepened your methodological competence, expanded interdisciplinary networks, and built the confidence to engage students and wider audiences in meaningful climate conversations.
