In January, an email announcing an opportunity to learn about the Olympics in Paris sparked immense excitement among students at King’s College London and at eight more universities across the continent. Paris, a mere two-hour Eurostar journey from London, was an unexpected but thrilling destination. This trip promised a unique educational experience beyond the borders of the UK, centred around the rich history and contemporary issues of the Olympic Games.

A full and diverse programme

The trip to Paris marked the end of the Circle U.lympics project, where academics and administrative staff worked together to give students an interdisciplinary insight into the Olympic Games.

The purpose of the trip to Paris was to unite a diverse group of students from various disciplines and academic levels at Circle U.’s French host institution, Université Paris Cité, specifically within the Department of Science and Techniques of Sports and Physical Activities (STAPS). Each day from 9 am to 6 pm, we engaged in a range of activities and discussions.

These sessions covered critical topics such as the root causes of impoverishment, where students collaborated to propose feasible solutions, and explored sustainable living practices.

Another significant focus was the history of the Olympics. We examined the evolution of Olympic symbols and their changing interpretations over time. This multifaceted approach provided a holistic understanding of the Olympics, blending historical insight with contemporary relevance.

Environmental responsibility in focus

Given the sustainability theme of the trip, organisers emphasised the importance of minimising environmental impact. To align with this ethos, all King’s College London students travelled from London to Paris by the Eurostar train, significantly reducing our carbon footprint in comparison to flying.

Social atmosphere and personal reflections

The social dynamics of the trip were notably inclusive and welcoming. Students and staff fostered a vibrant and enjoyable environment. Cole, from King’s College London, shared his thoughts on the experience:

‘Circle U.lympics was an amazing experience to be a part of. The Olympic spirit was definitely there, as everyone was so kind and welcoming. I loved hearing about where everyone was from and I’m also thankful for the Paris students that showed us around the city. The seminars were truly informative, and it was great to learn and see how the city was preparing to host such a massive event. Also, learning how Olympic athletes prepare for events mentally was especially fascinating. Overall, it was a great week that I will remember for a long time.’

Ilaria, from the University of Pisa, also reflected on the enriching experience:

‘The atmosphere of the trip was incredibly vibrant and diverse. Meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures enriched the experience, and it felt like a cohesive community coming together to explore and learn. It was like a mini-Erasmus. Once back home, I was truly happy and satisfied with the week spent there, and I look forward to having a similar experience again. I particularly appreciated the opportunity to exchange ideas with such a dynamic group. I gained a deeper understanding of the Olympics, its historical significance, and the values it embodies, such as unity, sportsmanship, and perseverance. It was very rewarding to explore Paralympic sports. Overall, the trip was both enlightening and enjoyable, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of it.’

In addition, Antoine from UCLouvain was also satisfied with his experience:

‘An amazing project! Between the seminars in which many topics have been discussed, the visit of Paris and some of its museums, and of course all the new relationships I could build with other European students, I am really grateful to have been selected for this Circle U.lympics Project. I recommend this kind of initiative and would redo it with no hesitations.’

For many participants, including those who had never taken the Eurostar, travelled alone to a new country, or met peers from other European universities, this trip was a thrilling adventure. The week-long event was a resounding success, marked by new experiences, extensive learning, and a significant amount of fun.
