This workshop is organized as part of Circle U. seedfund project Confronting poverty: uniting disciplines for global impact.

It will offer you the opportunity both to attend presentations by colleagues from different disciplines working on the topic of poverty (in a broad sense), and to learn how to undertake interdisciplinary research on confronting poverty with an international group of students, professors (UCLouvain, Universita di Pisa, King’s College London, Universitetet i Oslo) and specialists from Louvain Coopération, the development cooperation NGO of UCLouvain. Therefore, it is above all an interactive space where participants will take an active role and engage in research and exploration. In this context, you can either deepen a topic you’re already familiar with (e.g. as part of a course paper, master paper, traineeship,…) and receive enriching feedback on your work, or be involved in work on a new topic.

The workshop will address different issues concerning poverty and related processes (inequalities, economic growth, North-South relations, etc.) from the perspective of among others discourse analysis, economics, European studies, history and political science. One of the main objectives of our joint research endeavor will be to critically explore the narratives of politicians, official instances, academia, NGOs and society at large about poverty and to analyze how the discourse on poverty influences policy design at different levels.
