How to Combine Research and Learning in your Courses?

Research-based learning develops students' research competencies while simultaneously deepening their subject-specific knowledge. In this workshop we introduce research-based learning as a pedagogical framework by outlining both theoretical foundations and practical applications across diverse teaching environments. With our participants, we explore methodologies that facilitate transitioning from traditional teaching approaches to curricula incorporating authentic research experiences.

Date : 14 April, from 1pm to 3pm.

Speakers :  Wolfgang Deicke, Laura Schilow, University of Humboldt-Berlin.

Education for Sustainability – how can we teach the crisis?

Graduates face interrelated threats arising from the socio-ecological crisis. At the nexus of society, environment and economics, these threats defy simple solutions and call for a response from every discipline in higher education. Students need to learn how to bring the knowledge, worldviews and approaches of their academic discipline into contact with those from other disciplines and wider society. Through these encounters, students comprehend the dimensions and causes of a given aspect of the crisis,  develop insights about where they and their academic learning can contribute, and become able to take action. This kind of education is most effective when it deepens disciplinary learning, enables students to bring that learning to sustainability problems, and maintains a commitment to justice - even while navigating competing views of what justice looks like.

Date : 22 April, from 11am to 12.30pm.

Speaker : Dr Mira Vogel Sfhea, Senior Lecturer in Education, King’s Academy, King’s College London
