The Rectors and Presidents of Circle U. and the Circle U. Student Union (CUSU) reaffirm their strong solidarity with the students, staff, and leadership of the University of Belgrade – a founding member of our alliance. We express deep concern about developments that threaten institutional autonomy, academic freedom, the rule of law, and democratic principles.
We recall our commitments under the Magna Charta Universitatum, which upholds freedom of enquiry and university autonomy as fundamental pillars of democratic societies. These principles guide our alliance and remain central to the mission and vision of Circle U. As close partners of the University of Belgrade, we cannot remain silent when the autonomy and independence of a member university are placed under strain. Threats to academic freedom in one country affect the integrity of the European academic community as a whole.
We therefore call on:
- Serbian authorities to immediately cease all forms of intimidation against students, staff, and university leadership,
- European institutions and European governments to respond clearly and decisively,
- The international academic community to express solidarity with the University of Belgrade and the wider Serbian academic community.
The Rectors and Presidents of Circle U. and CUSU stand firmly with the students, professors, researchers, administrative staff, and leadership of the University of Belgrade. We will continue to closely monitor developments and collaborate with the university to identify concrete forms of support.

Circle U. saopštenje o nedavnim dgađajima u Srbiji
Rektori i predsednici univerziteta u okviru evropske univerzitetske alijanse Circle U. i Studentska unija Circle U. (CUSU) još jednom čvrsto naglašavaju svoju solidarnost sa studentima, zaposlenima i rukovodstvom Univerziteta u Beogradu – jednog od osnivača naše Alijanse. Izražavamo duboku zabrinutost zbog događaja koji prete institucionalnoj autonomiji, akademskoj slobodi, vladavini prava i demokratskim principima.
Posvećeni smo obavezama preuzetim potpisivanjem povelje Magna Charta Universitatum, koja čuva slobodu istraživanja i autonomiju univerziteta kao fundamentalne stubove demokratskih društava. Ovim principima se vodi i naša Alijansa i oni predstavljaju okosnicu misije i vizije za Circle U. Kao partneri koji blisko sarađuju sa Univerzitetom u Beogradu ne možemo ostati nemi dok se autonomija i nezavisnost jedne naše članice nalaze pod pritiskom. Kada se preti akademskoj slobodi u jednoj zemlji, podriva se integritet evropske akademske zajednice u celini.
Stoga pozivamo da:
- Srpske vlasti odmah prestanu sa svim vidovima zastrašivanja studenata, zaposlenih i rukovodstva Univerziteta,
- Evropske institucije i vlade evropskih država odlučno i nedvosmisleno reaguju na ova dešavanja,
- Međunarodna akademska zajednica izrazi solidarnost sa Univerzitetom u Beogradu, kao i širom akademskom zajednicom u Srbiji.
Rektori i predsednici univerziteta u okviru alijanse Circle U. i CUSU čvrsto stoje uz studente, profesore, istraživače, administrativno osoblje i rukovodstvo Univerziteta u Beogradu. Nastavićemo pažljivo da pratimo razvoj događaja i sarađujemo sa Univerzitetom kako bismo pronašli konkretne načine za dalju podršku.
